Bratwurst Grilled Cheese

  • 2 Joyn Bratwurst, sliced
  • 4 slices sourdough or rye bread
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 tsp whole grain mustard
  • ground pepper

Instructions

  1. Sauté the brats: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced bratwurst and cook until browned on both sides and cooked through, about 5–7 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Prep the bread: Butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side, layer cheddar cheese, brat slices, sauerkraut, and a swipe of mustard if using. Top with another slice of bread, buttered side facing out.
  3. Grill it up: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Add the sandwiches and cook 3–5 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  4. Serve: Let rest for a minute before slicing. Serve hot, with a cold beer or crisp cider on the side.

Notes

No sauerkraut on hand? Quick-pickle some thinly sliced cabbage in lemon juice and salt for a crunchy, tangy stand-in.
